Metered Parking has Brought Rainy Days!

"Merchants and Employees have financially suffered because of metered parking in Port Jeff"  K Veale PJMC

Our Village and the "parking committee" have take a manageable parking problem in this town and turned it into financial disaster for the merchants and employees of this town. Most businesses in town, we have surveyed have reported a substantial drop in sales and customers, every month since metered parking stared in June. The actual meter system is not user friendly and even after months of operation still frustrates and confuses visitors who try to use it. People don't like to pay for something that is free everywhere else! People don't like to be inconvenienced with a municipal style meter when they are coming for lunch or to shop. People don't like getting ticket or worrying about be ticketed. The taxpaying residents of Port Jeff have been asked to pay for a system that will probably cost more to operate than it brings in. In an effort to make the system pay for itself code enforcement has been writing tickets all summer long. This is totally counter productive because you wind up chasing away the very people you need to make the metered system a financial success.  The taxpaying residents have been asked to pay $250,000 for a metering system that discourages people from coming to town and then asked to pay an additional $237,610 in salaries for additional code enforcement.  Metered parking is just plain bad for Port Jeff. It's time to say enough is enough and scrap this white elephant! It is clear that the "parking committee" has it all wrong with their solution for the parking problems in Port Jeff. The so called" parking problem" exists for 3 months. We are all being asked to pay for the "parking committees" parking solution" all year long. Their cure for the "parking problem" is definitely worst than the problem ever was. Metered parking is a waste of taxpayers money.  Metered Parking is bad for Port Jeff, it's merchants, employees, visitors and  taxpaying residents

Now is the Time to End Metered Parking !

Port Jeff Code Enforcement Budget Skyrocketing!

Budget up $237,610 this Year !

The Village Treasurer Don Pearce has confirmed that the amount budgeted this year for code enforcement labor this year has increased significantly. In 2006 that budget line was $297,186. The current budget is $534,796. Wow, a whopping 80% increase! The Residents of Port Jeff need to ask what they are getting for their Tax dollars. In the long run writing lots of tickets is bad for Port Jeff. It's also costing the taxpayers lots of money.  Overzealous code enforcement is chasing visitors and our customers from Port Jefferson and discourages people from coming back to Port Jeff. The village should consider spending money on Programs that unite and bring people into this town instead of programs that encourage people to go elsewhere. * source- Port Jeff Times Record 10/25/2007
