Code Enforcement In Port Jeff "Invite em & Write em"
Port Jefferson is lucky to be served by the professional and dedicated men and women in our Code Enforcement Department. Chief Wally Tomaszewski and his officers works long hours attending to the policing and security needs of our village. In past years, code enforcement was a smaller and was able to take care of the village needs in a less visible manner. However in 2007 with the advent of metered parking Code Enforcement has taken on a new, more aggressive role. Apparently our elected officials have decided to declare war on visitors to Port Jeff. Visitor, merchants, employees, residents have all been greeted by a ticketing barrage since the beginning of metered parking in town. Crime is not on the increase in Port Jeff, but code enforcement is. The village needs to understand that strict or overzealous code enforcement is not good for Port Jefferson or our visitors. People come to Port Jeff to walk around, shop, spend some quality time together and have a bite to eat . Never ending meter parking patrols and the threat of a ticket is changing the friendly character of our village. We need to invite people to Port Jeff not write people who come to Port Jeff.

Port Jeff Code Enforcement Budget Skyrocketing! Budget up $237,610. this Year ! The Village Treasurer Don Pearce has confirmed that the amount budgeted this year for code enforcement labor this year has increased significantly. In 2006 that budget line was $297,186 and the current budget is $534,796. Wow, a whopping 80% increase! The Residents of Port Jeff need to ask their Mayor what they are getting for their Tax dollars. In the long run writing lots of tickets is bad for Port Jeff. It's costing the taxpayers lots of money. Overzealous code enforcement is chasing visitors and our customers from Port Jefferson and discourages people from coming back to Port Jeff. The village should consider spending more money on Programs that unite and bring people into this town instead of programs that encourage people to go elsewhere. * source- Port Jeff Times Record 10/25/2007
